Below is a built example of a modernist extension we did in the Cotswolds which we clad in rustic Corten Steel.
Above is the floor plan for this extension. We simply removed all the old static walls and created an open plan space but with a new (full width of the house!) sliding door - which transforms the kitchen from a private to open plan space at the pull of a handle.
